Collaborations in progress...

“Untitled”
A collaboration between Breege Hynes and Dee McDonnell. Breege Hynes is a printmaker based in Galway and is one of the core members of expanded draught. Dee McDonnell is a recent sculpture graduate of Cluain Mhuire Galway and was awarded the Student of the year award which is a show in the Galway Arts Centre in 2009.

Breege and Dee decided to collaborate during a brainstorm session at an expanded draught meeting in January of this year. They are both quite interested in the notion of visual correspondence, using the postal service and hand delivered envelopes rather than electronic forms of communication. The decided that for a initial period of two weeks to send each other an image or images everyday by post. During this time they would not speak on the phone through text messages or e-mail. Dee decided to use polaroids as her main source of communication but also used collage, mixed media and handmade paper, Breege used collage, drawing, cut outs and photographs as hers. At the end of the two weeks they got together and looked at the correspondence to see if they could maybe find a pattern or a similarity running through both of their images, they noticed that someday’s the images had been a reaction the image received from the other person and others completely separate. They decided to take a break and come back to the idea at a later date. At the moment they are meeting regularly to discuss the next step and are considering an extended period of similar correspondence with the end result possibly being an exhibition of all of their communication.

Expanded draught will aim to find a space to exhibit the final work.

Dukes of decent

“Dukes of decent”

Was a collaboration between the Dukes of decent, Allison Regan and myself Joanne Dolan.
The dukes of decent are a band based in Galway and have been involved in expanded draught since early 2008. Allison Regan and I are the founders of Expanded Draught. I am a visual artist and printmaker specialising in drawing and digital printmaking and Allison is a sculptor working in all areas of sculpture specialising in audio, visual and kinetics.

At one of expanded draught’s meetings, members of Dukes of decent expressed an interest in putting on a one off gig in an empty space. The band were working on a one hour set of songs that segued into one another, and they were interested in having visuals to accompany the music. Allison and I decided that we would be interested in exploring this and went along to a number of the bands rehearsals. We initially discussed editing video specifically for the music being played but in the end decided that a more organic approach would be better. Allison and I created and edited our visuals separately as we were interested in seeing if they would sync up on a purely accidental level. When we did bring the two separate pieces together, the most surprising thing was that we had both used a lot of mirrored images, fast paced shots and high contrast images. The major difference being the use of colour, with my visuals being intensely colourful and Allison’s being more subdued. We both used various speeds to aid synchronisation of video and sound.

On the night of the performance we set up two digital projectors, one in each corner and projected the two separate visuals on all three walls around the stage. We also placed some white boards on various stands on the stage to highlight and bring focus onto the band. The invited audience reacted well to both the music and the visuals, and the feedback in the main was that both the music and visuals worked extremely well together, with both elements enhancing the other. We are currently cutting a video to one of the bands tracks using the visuals and video of the performance.

Collaborations to date...

"The Drawing Rooms"

Was a collaboration between all members of Expanded Draught, various DJ’s and the general public (and one dog). It took place between 10am and 10pm on Sunday 9th of march, above the Bierhaus, No 2 Henry street, Galway.

We covered all walls and floors of this three room space with paper and provided materials- pens, pencils, markers, tape, paint- alongside overhead and digital projectors, scanners, laptops, printers, digital and video cameras. Our aim was to cover every surface with drawing, static images and visuals during a twelve hour period.

We wanted to create a relaxed and welcoming environment for people to work, and music was provided throughout the session from a wide variety of DJ’’s playing everything from Jazz to minimal house.

Cyril Briscoe, a well known DJ the SISI duo (110th street, badger), Started the day. Cyril is also an audio visual tutor in Cluain Mhuire, Galway. His aim was to try and create a soundscape of sorts using clock radios, samples, records and live inputs and the result was drawing with sound. After the event Cyril made a piece inspired by the drawing rooms simply entitled “The Drawing Rooms” and we will use this as the soundtrack to a video documentation of the event. All in all an estimated 150 to 200 people passed through the space, most taking part in some way, others just viewing the drawing in progress and enjoying the music and refreshments provided.

In the end we achieved what we had aimed to do, to transform an empty white space into one almost entirely covered in drawing, collage and colour. An added bonus was the unexpected sense of community and sheer fun of the day.

We have been asked to do an event like the drawing rooms again with several spaces being offered to us, including a dance studio, and a soon to be demolished house in Galway city.
